I bought the album "Downtown" on vinyl about a year after it was released. I listened to it so much my roommate hid the album from me. "Downtown" is a classic, classic album that embodies Crenshaw's strengths for mimicking Buddy Holly and putting a new spin on rockabilly sound in general/5(12).

I have no doubt that it is T-Bone Burnette's hand in the production of this music that really helps to make this Marshall Crenshaw's best over all work/5(12).

Marshall Crenshaw entered the studio to begin work on his third album, Downtown, but for the first time, he was without the familiar backing of Chris Donato on bass and brother Robert Crenshaw on drums (though he does appear on two tracks).

Downtown was released in and featured three singles, "Little Wild One (No. 5)", "Blues Is King", and "The Distance Between". "Blues Is King" was inspired by the B.B. King album Blues Is King ; Crenshaw was mixed on the song, saying, "I was never percent happy with the lyrics, but I always thought the music was really beautiful, and that the track was nice, too.
